New York CNN —The massive cargo ship crash that destroyed the Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday will probably cost various shipping companies and insurers billions of dollars in damages. “Maritime law is steeped in antiquity. Maritime law is rooted in the need to settle disputes and enforce rules between different peoples, even before there was the concept of countries with definitive laws. That rule, known as general average, is still a guiding principle of maritime law. “it’s just a fundamental part of the way that the shipping business works,” said Martin Davies, director of the Maritime Law Center at Tulane University.

Marine insurance companies will be on the hook for much of the costs. These insurance companies are backed by insurance companies of their own – a type of business known as a reinsurer. The potential cost of insurance claims from the bridge collapse could be between $1 billion and $3 billion, analysts at Barclays wrote in a note Wednesday. “But other than that, the economic impact of what has happened will be enormous, but not recoverable from the ship,” Davies said. Maryland lawmakers, meanwhile, are drafting an emergency bill to provide income replacement for Port of Baltimore workers impacted by the bridge collapse.

The class-action litigation agreement includes payments of $1,500 for individual minors, according to Boston-based Veolia North America. Veolia North America had faced a trial this month in federal court, but that has been suspended pending final approval of its settlement agreement, the company said. The issues for a jury would have included whether Veolia North America breached care and, if so, whether that breach prolonged the crisis. Another trial is scheduled in October on behalf of seven other Flint children, according to their attorney, Corey Stern. The settlement announced Thursday by Veolia North America does not affect the October trial, Stern said.

Read previewThe city of Minneapolis is experimenting with a guaranteed basic income program, and the preliminary results are promising. Minneapolis has provided $500 monthly payments with no strings attached to 200 low-income families for the last year. Flint, Michigan — for example — recently opened enrollment for a basic income program for pregnant mothers, giving them a lump sum during pregnancy and $500 a month for their baby's first year of life. In Iowa, two Republican state representatives are pushing legislation to ban basic income programs, Business Insider reported. A lawmaker in Texas, meanwhile, called a newly launched basic income program in Harris County, which includes Houston, unconstitutional.

Children who are angry and argumentative can be diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder. Psychologists think it may oversimplify deeper causes, like ADHD, autism, and trauma. AdvertisementWhile most children throw tantrums or defy their parents at some point, there's an explanation for when it happens all the time: oppositional defiant disorder. Advertisement"When parents fear that their child has ODD, I want them to go, 'Great, we know what to do. "An old mentor of mine would always say to parents, 'You're not the agent of blame; you're the agent of change,'" he said.

DETROIT – An ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Detroit automakers had little to no direct effect on General Motors' third-quarter U.S. new vehicle sales. Sales of every one of the Detroit automaker's brands rose compared to a year earlier. Only 25,200 workers, or roughly 17% of UAW members covered by the expired contracts with GM, Ford Motor and Stellantis, are part of the work stoppages. UAW has been gradually increasing the strikes since the work stoppages began, after the sides failed to reach tentative agreements by Sept 14. The targeted walkouts aim to preserve the union's funds and prolong the work stoppages to keep the automakers off keel.

Archaeologists recently found straight lines of 25 pits dating to around 8,000 years ago. The Mesolithic pits contain animal bones, including those of an extinct species of cattle. The pits are arranged in straight lines, and a few contain animal bones with marks suggesting people ate them. The arrangement of the pits appears intentional, dug in several straight lines covering an area of up to about 1,600 feet. The researchers at MOLA plan to investigate whether the Bedfordshire pits' arrangement coincides with the solstice or other celestial events.
